Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific decisions made by the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
